September 28 Syroco Sundays!Sundays will now be "reserved" for SYROCO! History, pics, gossip, stats.... Feel free to send comments, pics, and questions to SYROCOKID@GMAIL.COM I don't claim to be an expert on anything, but I will do my best to entertain! Syroco Corkscrews have always been desirable amongst certain collectors. Over the years they have been like a roller coaster in the market. Sometimes you can pick up a Waiter for $30 and then a few weeks later the price shoots to over $100! You can only hope you are on the selling end of these transactions. Today was definitely one of those days..... I listed a Stained Codger last week. Well today in the final seconds 2 bidders went snipe to snipe over the piece! $295 was the realized price today! I wonder what a Stained Codger with an Advertising Plate would bring at auction.....? September 23 Ok.....Who Was It?!I've been patiently waiting to see where this Syroco Opener w/ Bar Set would end at. Well today it reached a very high $255! I can't believe it! It just so happens that the seller created the listing concealing the identity of the winner. Anyone know who won? A fellow collector who happens to have the same 2 items confirmed that the Bar Set was NOT made by Syroco. That was a real bummer, but I'm glad I didn't place any crazy bids. Here you can see the actual Listing Pic and another Pic of the same items with dogs drinking? P.S. Who is the ebay seller aha-buch? He's clogging my searches! September 22 A missed oportunity.....Doh! Yesterday was a good day for some, but I forgot to bid! A rare Brown Mermaid listing ended yesterday at $402.00! What a deal! Especially considering that it sold for $517 the previous week and did not hit it's reserve price. I also missed out one a Mid-sized MOP Perfume Corkscrew! The final bid was $88! Goodness! Congrats to you lucky two! September 16 Super Fast!I was able to score this little guy on Saturday, and it arrived today! Go figure, the USPS is on the move! It's marked JP just below the handle at the top of the shank. Maybe it's just me, but I have not seen very many Perille Direct pulls in the field. Mostly just the propeller types. September 15 Nice weekend!First I'd like to give Kudos to RL! He found a Curley in this misc lot. You may have seen this Gallery picture on the ebay listing, but a separate pic of the corkscrew was also included in the listing. AND to Josef for spotting a second Barnes Patent in a box-o-corkscews. That would be his second Barnes in like 10 days! Most of us just want to find one this decade! This fine German Bow did arrive on the Island this weekend. It has a facated bow with 6 tools. I'm not really a bow guy, but recent scores may just change my mind. Anyone got a 12-tool?? September 11 So Fake!Yesterday a Crosby Pup Corkscrew "Look-a-Like" was listed on our favorite auction site. The scammers have done an ok job with trying to duplicate this one. It's obviously not marked like the real one. I would really ask all collectors to be cautious when bidding on "too good to be true" listings or "RARE / One of a Kind" listings. There are a lot of people altering and "inventing" various types of corkscrews. Or even adding on a whistle part to a real corkscrew, has also been popular amonst these scammers. Take the time to look the item up in a book or a website! Check every detail! Ask a fellow collector for a second opinion! Also, be especially cautious when bidding on items that are located in BUENOS AIRES, Argentina. There are lots of FAKES coming from this area! September 10 Not Bone but StagI discovered an advertisement for "Kitchen Items" and deep in the ad it also listed a "Bone Corkscrew" included in the lot. I quickly called the number listed and crossed my fingers. After about 15 questions about the corkscrew in question, I struck a deal with the seller. A large box of stuff arrived today with all sorts of common openers, stoppers, and corkscrews. Needless to say, the "Bone Corkscrew" was the only one I'm not embarrassed to photograph. AND it's a stag antler, not bone. But the shank is cool! And for the price, I'm very happy to have it on the Island with me! September 08 Small packagesNice things do come in small packages! The latest arrival to the island is a MOP Perfume corkscrew! It has a Sterling Silver shank with sliver bands on the handle. A very nice piece, regardless if it's missing it's sheath. Finding a match might be a challenge though. September 01 screwing aroundLet the games begin! A suspicious corkscrew was listed today. It's has a scrimshaw handle and a fancy walker shank. As one would think it's from American heritage, the drawing is of an Asian character. So a simple game of "I Dare You" has begun. Who can bid the highest without winning the listing, will be awarded the corkscrew. What have I gotten myself into? Well a corkscrew is a corkscrew, right? |
